The Trial of Antigone: Heroine Or Enemy of The State?
Leading U.S. legal scholars take on the case of Antigone v. Creon

An all-star team of litigators including Robert Clifford, founder and senior partner at Clifford Law Offices in Chicago, is preparing to take on one of the great legal cases in literary history sponsored by the National Hellenic Museum.

The Trial of Antigone follows the extraordinary success of the Trial of Socrates and the Trial of Orestes and reunites the illustrious legal teams who will retry the case through a present-day view but within the context of the laws of ancient Greece.

The Hon. Richard A. Posner, Presiding Judge, U.S. Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals; Hon. William J. Bauer of the U.S. Seventh Circuit and Hon. Charles P. Korcoras, of the Cook County Circuit Court will preside over treason trial of Antigone who was sentenced to death for defying the king’s order, according to Greek mythology.

Attorneys Clifford and former U.S. Attorney Dan Webb, now of Winston & Strawn, will serve as the prosecution team. Patrick M. Collins, of Perkins Coie, and former U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald, now at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, will defend Antigone. A jury of citizens, the audience, will decide whether Antigone’s burying her brother was treason or an act of duty.

The event is scheduled for March 10 at 6:30 p.m. in The Field Museum’s James Simpson Theatre.

Tickets for The Trial of Antigone are available at the museum’s gift shop or online at www.nationalhellenicmuseum.org or by phone at 312-66-1234.

The National Hellenic Museum’s Trial Series highlights the enduring relevance and value of Greek philosophy and thought. The Trial of Antigone offers the unique opportunity to watch some of America’s foremost legal minds contemplate and debate evolving issues and perennial questions that has concerned humanity for thousands of years.
