Robert A. Clifford, nationally renowned trial attorney in Chicago, spoke to the Las Vegas Review-Journal about the injured security guard who is being housed by the Mandalay Bay hotel following the Oct. 1 shooting at a country music festival.
Investigators reportedly are investigating the knowledge of hotel executives and security staff after a security guard on the hotel premises reportedly was shot in the leg by the gunman that killed 58 and injured another 489 people. Although the hotel has released a statement saying that it is protecting the security guard, Jesus Campos, from the press and others while he cooperates with investigators, some are questioning the motives of the hotel in housing the 25-year-old man for free, questioning if it could affect his witnessing of the events first hand.
Clifford told Jeff German, reporter for the Las Vegas newspaper, that initially the gesture could be interpreted as innocent, but Clifford said, “MGM eventually will have to return Campos to independent living so the company cannot be accused of attempting to influence him.” (“MGM Paying for Campos Hotel Stay; Lawyers Question Influence Over Key Shooting Witness,” by Jeff German, Las Vegas Review-Journal, Oct., 27, 2017.)
Campos reportedly was shot in the leg while approaching the gunman’s suite. He appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week to talk about the incident. The timeline of events was not discussed on this show.
MGM Resorts, the owner of the Mandalay Bay hotel where the gunman holed himself up before taking aim at innocent concert goers, is facing a multitude of lawsuits by those injured and the families of those who lost loved ones that question the lack of security measures as well as the hotel’s lack of personnel training and response to the event.
