Lawyers for a four-year-old boy who sustained brain damage shortly after birth from alleged medical negligence have agreed to a $10.3 million settlement with Mercy Hospital. Cook County Circuit Judge William D. Maddux, chief judge of the Law Division, signed the settlement order late Friday.
Sammie Gist of south suburban Lansing allegedly received an overdose of glucose solution after delivery in February 1999 at Mercy Hospital. Lawyers for the boy said the settlement will actually amount to $27 million because it will be paid through a structured settlement. Robert A. Clifford, Keith A. Hebeisen and Susan A. Capra represented Gist and Lawrence Helms of Swanson, Martin & Bell represented Mercy Hospital.
