$3 Million Verdict for Medical Malpractice

man who died of medical negligence at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center
John Stone, 30, of Chicago’s southwest side died in 1994 after doctors at Mercy
Hospital failed to properly treat him for a blood clot in his left leg. He then had a huge
clot in his lung three weeks later and died.

Following a four-week trial, the jury of seven men and five women deliberated
three days before returning a verdict of $3.049million.

“This tragedy could have been avoided had the doctors and medical personnel at
Mercy Hospital just followed standard procedure to prevent blood clotting in Mr. Stone,”
said Keith Hebeisen, who tried the case before the jury at the Daley Center. “The verdict
sends a clear message to these health care professionals that such negligence will not be
tolerated.” Hebeisen, a partner at Clifford Law Offices, tried the case with associate
Katherine Dzik.

Two cardiologists and a hematologist also had been named as defendants, but the
jury found only against the hospital and its employees for its negligent treatment of Stone.
