Clifford Files False Imprisonment Lawsuit Against Marshall Fields on Behalf of Chicago Symphony Violinist

Press Release, 06/20/2000

Top personal injury attorney Robert Clifford is filing today (Tuesday, June 20) a lawsuit against Marshall Fields on behalf of a violinist for the Chicago Symphony who was wrongfully accused of shoplifting and was handcuffed against her will.

Sando Shia, a violinist for the Chicago Symphony since 1990, was injured when three security personnel at the Marshall Fields at Water Tower Place unlawfully restrained her May 31.

She was injured when they handcuffed her to a table, despite her protests and her requests to contact an attorney. After the incident, Shia immediately went to the emergency room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The security personnel released Shia without explanation for the incident, but the store manager of Fields subsequently sent Shia a letter of apology.

Clifford is filing a lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court alleging false imprisonment, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He also is filing a motion for a Protective Order so that any and all videotapes taken of the incident at the store will be preserved.
