Clifford Law Offices Settles Construction Accident Case for $1.8 Million

Press Release, 10/25/1999

Clifford Law Offices settled a Structural Work Act case on behalf of a 33-year-old south suburban man for $1.8 million this week.

The south suburban man fractured his right hip and several vertebrae in his back were crushed when he fell off the Wolf Road Bridge near Palwaukee Airport dropping 15 feet to a frozen river on Dec. 29, 1993. Clifford Law Offices contended that the general contractor should have provided safety netting, lagging or a safety cable to prevent the south suburban man and other ironworkers from falling off the bridge.

The settlement was against Eric Bolander Construction Company, Inc., the general contractor of the job, as well as from the insurer for S & J Construction, the south suburban man's employer.

Kevin Durkin, a partner at Clifford Law Offices , and associate Michael Krzak settled the case.

"These foreseeable injuries could have been avoided through some simple safety devices readily available to construction workers" Durkin said. "The south suburban man is no longer able to work in his chosen vocation as an iron worker for the rest of his life."

The south suburban man of Lansing, Illinois, is now the safety director at S & J Construction of South Holland.
