Clifford Sues Golf Association and Evans Scholars for Death of NIU Student

Press Release, 10/26/2000

Powerhouse personal injury attorney Robert Clifford will file a lawsuit today (Thursday, Oct. 26) on behalf of the family of a Northern Illinois University student who was killed when a fellow student threw a cinder block from the third floor of the Chick Evans Scholars House.

Brian White, 20, of Oak Lawn, was standing outside the house when the concrete block struck and killed him last month (Sept. 15). Charged with first-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter was fellow Evans Scholar Louis Carfagnini, 21, of Elmwood Park, who pleaded not guilty to the charges Friday in criiminal court.

Clifford will file the negligence lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court today against the Western Golf Association and the Evans Scholars Foundation. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants were aware that parties with alcohol were being held on the premises but did not stop or control them. The Western Golf Association employed a graduate resident adviser on the premises whose duty was to control he conduct at the Evans House.

Clifford represents Elizabeth Hannon and Robert White, parents of Brian White.
