Clifford Law Offices Sponsors STATIC Day

Press Release, 10/11/2010

Karina Kedo, 17, of Lake Forest was struck on her bicycle by a driver on her cell phone. Thankfully, she was only slightly injured, but this event was the catalyst for her to start S.T.A.T.I.C. (Stop Texting and Talking in Cars) Now Illinois.

Karina, a high school senior at Regina Dominican in Wilmette, has been raising money for her cause and through the generous donation from Clifford Law Offices was able to purchase two virtual driving simulators through Lawrence Hall Youth Services which has been actively involved in this important cause.

They will be unveiled and tested by students at a media launch at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Regina Dominican, 745 Locust Rd., Wilmette. The simulators will be demonstrated at this time and will be available to students at Regina for a week.   They also will be made available at no charge to all high schools across the state of Illinois in an effort to make all teens aware of the dangers of texting while driving.  Already at least five Chicago-area high schools have indicated an interest in having the simulators brought to their schools for their students to use free of charge.

Secretary of State Jesse White is scheduled to speak at the event Tuesday as well as Rep. John D'Amico (D-15th Dist., Chicago), sponsor of the legislation in Illinois.   All students in attendance will be encouraged to sign White's pledge against texting and talking on a cell phone while driving.  Governor Pat Quinn also is expected to declare Oct. 12 to be STATIC Day in Illinois. The Proclamation will be presented to representatives of Regina at the press conference.

Representatives from SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Lawrence Hall Youth Services, the Illinois State Police, the Wilmette Police Department and several local high schools also will be at the all-school assembly as well as Robert Clifford, senior partner at Clifford Law Offices, the principle sponsor of STATIC.
