After concluding an investigation of the deadly August 2011 stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair, that state's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined three organizations involved in the incident.

Mid-America faces a $63,000 penalty for violations related to engineering practices, worker supervision and risk assessment, according to the release.

Stiff sentence proposed for cruise ship captain
02/06/2012

Italian prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of more than 2,500 years for the captain of the capsized cruise ship Costa Concordia, the Daily Mail reported.

In a closed court session in Florence on February 6, prosecutors reportedly proposed that the captain face a 15-year multiple manslaughter sentence, an additional 10 years for causing a disaster, and eight years for each Costa Concordia passenger who died or was abandoned when the captain left the ship during the evacuation, according to the source. Media reports have indicated that the captain grounded the Concordia by steering it too close to the shore, then abandoned ship while the disaster was still unfolding. Victims of the catastrophe may be pleased that prosecutors are seeking harsh penalties for the captain, but they may also want to confer with maritime lawyers who can advise them about their own options for legal redress.
