Chicago Worker Falls Into Gears of Drawbridge

09/02/2010

A Chicago bridge worker needed to be rescued by firefighters after he fell into the gear works of a drawbridge.

While the man was working on the Washington Street Bridge above the Chicago River he fell into the gears, Chicago Fire Department Battalion Chief Dan Fabrizio told NBC Chicago.

Marine rescue units were initially dispatched to the scene because firefighters thought the worker fell in the water. However, he came to rest in the workings of the drawbridge, after reportedly falling 30 feet, according to the news source.

The firefighters were able to rescue the man.

"They had to lower a ladder down and do an obstructive type raise. We were able to get to the victim and bring him up, " Fabrizio told the news provider.

A fire department spokesman said that the worker was taken to a hospital to be treated for arm injuries.
