09/11/2010A flagger working at a construction zone in Crawford County on Illinois 1 was struck and killed by a grain truck on Thursday.
The 34-year-old man of Orland Park, Illinois, was taken by helicopter to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana where he died two hours later, according to the Effingham Daily News.
Illinois State Police said that the flagger was running to a ditch on the side of the road to avoid the grain truck. However, he was struck by the truck in the ditch as the vehicle swerved to avoid stopped traffic, reports the news source.
According to the police report, the 60-year-old driver of the grain truck did not see a stopped vehicle in front of the flagger at the entrance to the construction zone.
