Man airlifted to hospital after car collides with train in Iowa

09/10/2010

A driver had to be airlifted to a hospital after his vehicle was struck by a train in rural Iowa.

The accident occurred near Rudd, Iowa, when the driver was driving north and was hit by the train on the driver's side, according to KIMT, a CBS affiliate. The driver had to be flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.

Floyd County Sheriff Rick Lynch told the news source that drivers need to be alert when approaching train intersections.

"People just need to be aware when they see those railroad crossing signs they need to pay attention, slow up, make sure the intersection is clear before they cross over. Typically train and vehicle accidents the vehicle's going to lose," he said.

There was corn on all sides of the intersection where the accident occurred, perhaps making it difficult for the driver to see the approaching train, according to the news source.

There were four fatal train crossing collisions in Iowa in 2009, reports KIMT.
