Man Killed in Illinois Farm Accident

09/07/2010

An Illinois man died in Madison County on Sunday when he was hit by a combine.

The Associated Press reports that the 50-year-old Staunton, Illinois, man died of the head injuries he sustained while helping a farmer unload corn into a grain truck from the combine.

"The farmer moved the combine into reverse to shift the load in the truck," Madison County Sheriff's Captain Brad Wells, told the news source. "The farmer did not know, and could not see, that the victim had walked behind the combine to make an adjustment on the combine. While backing the combine, the victim was struck by a rear tire on the combine."

The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, reports KMOV.com.

According to the National Safety Council, farm accidents and other work-related health problems kill as many as 1,300 people each year.
