Motorcyclist Killed in Illinois Tractor Trailer Accident
09/02/2010A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday morning in an Illinois tractor trailer accident.
According to Illinois State Police investigators, a 39-year-old riding a 1997 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Route 16 was killed when he allegedly ran a stop sign at Otterville Road, reports KMOX.com.
The rider reportedly drove right into the path of a 1997 Peterbilt tractor trailer. The motorcyclist was thrown from his bike and the two vehicles eventually came to a rest in a cornfield northwest of the intersection, according to StlToday.com.
The rider, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene. However, the truck driver was uninjured, according to police.
A University of Southern California study found that there were 5,154 motorcycle deaths in the U.S. in 2007, a 78 percent increase from 2000.
