Romeoville oil leak, California gas blast cause pipeline concerns
09/15/2010The failure of an oil pipeline in Romeoville, Illinois, coupled with the recent California gas leak explosion that killed four people have raised questions about some oil and gas pipelines, according to NBC Chicago.
Thousands of gallons of oil leaked into an industrial park and reservoir in Romeoville after a 12-foot portion of pipeline failed, reports the news provider.
The pipeline has caused some frustration among officials in Will County, which has more miles of underground pipeline than any other county in Illinois, according to the news source.
Will County Commissioner Kathleen Konicki told the news provider that she is frustrated that the local government doesn't have the authority or jurisdiction to do as much as she'd like in regards to the pipeline. She also said she wants "more rigorous setback requirements" and that she "worries about the explosion risk."
The Romeoville leak was the third time in three months that oil pipes owned by Enbridge Inc. failed. There were also incidents in Michigan and New York.
The gas explosion in San Bruno, California, earlier this month claimed the lives of at least four people, injured 50 others and destroyed about 40 homes.
Those in Illinois who are injured as a result of pipeline failures may want to contact Chicago injury lawyers.
