Two Truckers Dead in Illinois Tractor Trailer Accident
08/12/2010
Two
truckers were recently killed in a multiple-vehicle car crash on Interstate 70
in Madison County, Illinois.
According to Illinois State Police, the tractor trailer being driven by one of
the men crashed into stopped traffic in the right-hand, westbound lane on I-70,
reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The driver, who was 52-years-old, and his
23-year-old passenger were both killed in the tractor trailer accident when the
truck caught fire.
The crash started a chain reaction, with the initial vehicle pushing another
tractor trailer into a pickup truck, which in turn crashed into the rear of a
third tractor trailer, police said. According to authorities, the drivers of
one of the tractor trailers and the pickup were treated for minor injuries at
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.
Traffic had been stopped in the right-hand lane due to a previous tractor
trailer accident, which occured when the truck’s front cabin became separated
from its trailer, sending the two components to opposite sides of the road.
There were 1,043 traffic fatalities in Illinois during 2008, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
