The
U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)
recently announced that the Valley Meat Company was recalling approximately 1
million pounds of frozen ground beef that could be infected with E. coli.
The Modesto, California-based company says that the tainted frozen patties and
bulk ground beef were distributed across the country.
The federal agency first became aware of the problem last month when the
California Department of Public Health notified it of a small cluster of E.
coli cases that shared a similar, rare strain.
Valley Meat Company says that the contaminated beef was produced between
October 2, 2009, and January 12, 2010, but the FSIS says its concerned that
some of the E. coli infected beef may still be in some people’s freezers. Affected
products bear the number “EST. 8268” and inspection codes 27509 through 01210.
The agency urges anyone who has been exposed to the beef in question to contact
a health professional immediately.
Those who may have been exposed to the tainted beef or any other contaminated
products in Illinois may want to contact a Chicago personal injury attorney to
see if there is a legal way to address the issue.
