St. Louis Dispatch Editorial Against Tort Reform
In an editorial entitled, ‘Malpractice Suits Aren’t Driving the High Cost of Health Care” on Sept. 14, 20009, the Editorial Board of the St. Louis Dispatch newspaper wrote a poignant opinion on medical malpractice and now reforming the civil justice system just don’t connect because “lawsuits are far down the list.”
In a well written, well-thought-out editorial, the daily newspaper that serves the St. Louis, Missouri area, stated, “The biggest portion of malpractice settlements and jury awards are not for ‘pain and suffering’ or punitive damages, but for actual damages – lost income and future medical treatment.” It went on to say, “A 2006 report by the Congressional Budget Office found that t here were no reliable studies that showed tort reform by itself reduced health care spending.”
The newspaper’s editorial also stated, “Meanwhile, insurance companies providing malpractice insurance are doing pretty well.”
They get it.
