Juan R. Thomas, Of Counsel at Clifford Law Offices, was sworn in as President of the Illinois Bar Foundation (IBF) during the Illinois State Bar Association’s Annual Meeting on June 11, 2026, in St. Louis. In assuming the presidency, he becomes the second African American lawyer to serve as President of the organization since its founding in 1951.
A nationally recognized attorney and civic leader, Juan Thomas has dedicated his career to advancing justice, public service, and professional leadership. He is a longtime supporter of the Foundation and its mission, and has worked to advance efforts that expand access to justice and strengthen communities across Illinois.
Throughout his career, Thomas has received numerous honors for his leadership and service, including the American Bar Association’s Spirit of Excellence Award and recognition as one of the National Black Lawyers’ Top 100 Trial Lawyers. He currently serves on the American Bar Association Board of Governors and previously served as President of the National Bar Association. He will also be sworn in as President of the National Conference of Bar Presidents in August 2026.
The Illinois Bar Foundation, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, supports meaningful access-to-justice initiatives and programs that strengthen the legal profession throughout Illinois.
