Receive a Jury Summons? You Must Comply

Question: What happens if I ignore a jury summons?

Answer:  Jury summons are sent through the mail to a citizen’s home. If you receive a summons, you must report to the address indicated on the summons at the time stated. Failure to do so may result in your being held in contempt of court, and you may be fined, or in extreme circumstances, receive a jail sentence.     For more information about Illinois law, visit  If you have a legal question, send it to Illinois Law Now is a series of newspaper and internet posts prepared by the Illinois State Bar Association that address legal issues of interest to the public.
