Lawyers at Clifford Law Offices obtained a $5.59 million verdict on Friday, April 25, 2025, on behalf of a man who suffered permanent heart failure following a negligent stent procedure.
James C. Pullos, Patrick F. Bradley, and Julia C. Brosnahan, attorneys at Clifford Law Offices, tried the case for more than two weeks against Humboldt Park Health f/k/a Norwegian-American Hospital Inc. and John P. Monteverde, M.D., before Cook County Circuit Court Judge Bridget Mitchell at the Daley Center.
The twelve-person jury deliberated five hours before returning a verdict in favor of the plaintiff and his wife.
The plaintiff, a 59-year-old man from Chicago, experienced chest pains on June 22, 2020, when he was taken by ambulance to Norwegian-American Hospital (now known as Humboldt Park Health). It was determined that he was suffering a heart attack caused by complete blockage of his left coronary artery, requiring intervention to reopen it.
It was shown at trial that the interventional cardiologist placed an undersized stent in the coronary artery of the plaintiff’s heart, resulting in blood clotting at the location of the stent, which restricted blood flow to his heart. The interventional cardiologist was unable to open the blockage, and the plaintiff was transferred to Christ Hospital for further intervention. The plaintiff suffered permanent heart failure with reduced function of his left ventricle.
“This is a tragic story for a man who should be living a normal life if the procedure had been properly performed. He will now be suffering from permanent heart failure that will affect every aspect of his life for years to come,” Pullos said following the verdict.
Susan A. Capra, a partner at Clifford Law Offices, also worked on this matter and assisted in trial preparation.
