Center for Justice and Democracy Publishes New Study on the Safety of Electronic Vehicles

A new study entitled “Highway to the Danger Zone: The Enduring Risks of Electronic Vehicles” was released by the Center for Justice and Democracy, the only national consumer organization in the country exclusively dedicated to protecting the civil justice system.

The study, released May 6, 2025, examines fundamental safety problems that currently plague electronic vehicles (EV), passenger cars and trucks, electric buses, e-bikes, and e-scooters. It also examines the state of consumer protection and legal rights.

Authors Emily Gottlieb, Deputy Director for Law & Policy, and Joanne Doroshow, Executive Director, Center for Justice & Democracy at New York Law School, write, “Our study is focused on the fundamental safety problems that currently plague EV passenger cars and trucks, electric buses, e-bikes, and e-scooters. We examine the state of consumer protection, problems and defects faced by purchasers and legal rights available to victims. One thing is clear: EVs may be a critical part of solving the climate crisis, but without key safety improvements and better legal protections for consumers, the harm caused by these vehicles and their manufacturers will be substantial and costly.”

Robert A. Clifford, founder and senior partner at Clifford Law Offices, authored an article in the September 2024 issue of the Chicago Lawyer on liability involving heavier electronic vehicles and insufficient guardrail protection on the highways, leading to increased accidents.
